Age Appropriate Chores

Determining Age Appropriate Chores can be quite a challenge for caretakers, use the following list to begin your what chores at what age research and assign accordingly:

Age Appropriate Chores for the 2-3 year old:

  • Put books & toys away
  • Wipe spills
  • Clear own dishes from table
  • Fill pet’s food dish
  • Put clothes in hamper
  • Choose clothes & dress self

Age Appropriate Chores for the 4-5 year old:

  • List from ages 2-3 
  • Make own bed
  • Empty garbage in room
  • Water flowers
  • Set table
  • Clear table
  • Put away clean utensils {after knives have been removed}
  • Fix bowl of cereal

Age Appropriate Chores for the 6-7 year old:

  • Lists from ages 2-5 
  • Answer telephone
  • Bring own laundry to laundry room
  • Separating laundry into colors/loads
  • Sweep floors
  • Dusting
  • Clean own room
  • Help make breakfast and lunch
  • Pour own drinks
  • Make “spread” sandwiches
  • Wash table after meals
  • Pull weeds
  • Rake yard

Age Appropriate Chores for the 8-9 year old:

  • Lists from ages 2-7 
  • Put away groceries
  • Put away own laundry
  • Empty garbage bins in house
  • Help make dinner
  • Peel vegetables
  • Make toast
  • Get own snacks
  • Do dishes
  • Mop floors
  • Vacuum
  • Run own bath
  • Take pet for walk

Age Appropriate Chores for the 10-12 year old:

  • Lists from ages 2-9 
  • Take out garbage
  • Change bedding
  • Clean bathroom
  • Clean kitchen
  • Cook simple meals with supervision
  • Wash the dog
  • Wash car
  • Wash windows
  • Wash clothes
  • Fold and put away own laundry
  • Plan birthday party
  • Baby-sit younger siblings with parent in house

Age Appropriate Chores for the 13+ year old:

  • Lists from ages 2-12 
  • Mow lawn
  • Bake cookies and cakes
  • Cook more elaborate meals
  • Do chores for pay in neighborhood
  • Volunteer work
  • Baby-sit neighborhood kids
  • Iron clothes
